Ice Bows and Sun Halos

Last week I took this shot of an icebow over the town. The picture with Nanook is of a sun halo from last year and the one above that with Matt on the left is of some sun dogs last spring. Here are the scientific explanations for these optical phenomenon...we seem to get a lot of them up here.

For the past week we've been experiencing temperatures in the -40C's with the wind chill bringing it down to -60C. So I've been doing many short trips outside with the dogs and getting good use out of their doggy coats that I bought last year. They actually seem to make a big difference when it's windy and the dogs don't mind them at all. The temperatures are supposed to warm up again next week so hopefully we'll get back into the usual routine. I did manage to make a complete set of fan hitch lines and toggles for a team and I also brought home a qamutiq sled which I will lash some padding and fur onto this afternoon.
Other than that, Matt's back from Arviat and sleeping in this morning. He said the bullying workshop went really well and today he's going to practice some of the restraining moves on me. Lucky me.....
